May Header

Round and round we go, where we worship nobody knows! Thank you to everyone working hard to prepare our worship space each week. It has taken some getting used to, but we know now to look for the signs pointing us in the right direction. As the Session has approved the purchase of a new organ, there is work to be done in the sanctuary. Amro told us that the new organ should be complete by July. Until then, we will most likely worship in Pettus Hall each week. Members of the Worship Planning Team will evaluate the progress each Friday and post signs to help the rest of us know which direction to head for worship. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather in joy to worship our Creator. There is nothing more important in the week!

Tiffany has moved!

By the time you receive this newsletter, I will be soaking my aching muscles after packing, loading, and unloading a U-haul. Don’t worry, I will have help. My family and I will be very happy to be back in Memphis and that much closer to our new family at Graham Memorial

Thank you for all the prayers as I have traveled from Savannah each week and as Andy, Ian, Maggie, and I have made this transition.

Our new address is:
919 Dickinson Street

God’s Blessings,

Tiffany

Women of the Church

WomenThe Birthday Offering of Presbyterian Women will be dedicated at the last meeting for this year on May 13.  Envelopes will be available for the offering at Worship on May 18.  This year's theme: "Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear;" Isaiah 58:8.   This year's recipients are The Presbyterian Church of Congo and The Presbyterian Church of Kinshasa, and Lakeview Presbyterian Church Weekday School.  The grant for the Congo is for repairing existing schools, textbooks, motorbikes for regional supervisors, and to expand existing Moringa programs.  In New Orleans the grant money will be used to restore the church's Weekday school after Katrina flooding, and to equip it to serve multiple age groups.  Thank you for helping us with these two deserving ministries.

Men of the Church

It’s hard to believe but, our May meeting finale's is fast approaching. Jeff Dunaway and his group have been hard at work lining up good steaks and a great program. He has arranged for Col. John Sanfrantello, USMC Ret. To talk to us about his WWII experience. One of the many things that he’ll tell us about, is that he was actually on the USS Missouri when the Peace Treaty was signed in the South Pacific. Sounds like we’ll have a piece of living history in Pettus Hall Wednesday, May 7th. I certainly hope we have a great crowd of MOC members and guest, to honor this special hero from the past.

Session Highlights

The session of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church met on April 6th. This was the first meeting with Tiffany McClung as our moderator.

Christy White, chairman of the Pastor Nominating Committee reported to the session on their progress. Please keep this committee in your prayers as they work to fulfill their charge.

The youth group from West Plano Presbyterian Church in Texas sent a request to the session for permission to spend a night in our church on July 5th. The group of 25 youths and adults will be on their way back from a mission trip in Louisville, KY. The session voted to extend an invitation for the group to use our facilities for the night. The group will also join us in worship the next day. Hopefully, they will be willing to share some of their experiences with us in worship.

The Congregational Care and Concerns Committee announced that we will have a dinner on Wednesday, April 30th to honor our graduating seniors. The committee also proposed that the church have an old fashioned homecoming the weekend of September 28th. We would like to invite anyone who has been associated with our church to attend this event. Start jotting down names for the invitation list.

The Property and Grounds Committee presented a report from the Organ Committee. After much research and leg-work, the committee recommended that the church purchase an Allen 45 Stop Renaissance Quantum Series Organ for our sanctuary. The session voted to accept this proposal and hopefully work can begin soon to remove the old organ workings so the new organ can be installed. There will be some inconvenience with the removal and construction, but I am sure we will be very pleased with the results.

The session covets your prayers as we work to fulfill the mission of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Nancy Dunaway, Clerk of Session

Donations

Graham Memorial is currently accepting donations for our new Organ. When making your donation please list on your check for GMPC Organ Fund. We are currently in the Chapel or Pettus Hall for Worship, but hope to be back in the Sanctuary very soon. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we know everyone will enjoy the wonderful sounds of the new Allen Digital Organ.

Bible Quiz

Right after God granted Solomon his request for wisdom to govern, the wise king faced a dilemma about a baby. King Solomon ingeniously solved a dispute be-tween two women who both claimed to be the child’s mother (see 1 Kings 3:16-28). But who was the mother of Solomon?

A. Zipporah
B. Abigail
C. Queen of Sheba
D. Bathsheba

The answer is in 2 Samuel 12:24.

Answer: D

Angels

Angel

This is an excerpt from “Thoughts Along the Way” by Glenn Miller. This part of the daily journal deals with Angels and Glenn talks about the different Angels God has appointed for different jobs here on earth. The Angel of healing is called Raphael. We all question why someone we know or love becomes ill.

~

But the main point of the description is that God sends us healing and desires that all His creation be made whole. God does not wish illness or disease on anyone. Those are products of living in a fallen world and sometimes, the products of the choices we make. Nevertheless, God is always eager to redeem us from illness and disease according to His plan and His everlasting love for us. Sometimes that healing is immediate, sometimes it’s a longer process, and yes, even sometimes it’s on the other side of our physical death. But God is faithful to redeem us and heal us.

And therein lies hope!
